Squashed in Poole
On a steep hill within the town, Poole borough council has created a
6.5ft wide cycle lane, leaving just 4.5 ft for other road traffic
between this new lane and the centre road markings. An AA spokesman
expressed concern that this would force motorists into the opposing
carriageway but the council has pointed out that the cycle lane
markings 'are for guidance only' and could be straddled by motorists -
which seems to place cyclists at risk instead.
Just as bad as Europe
A poll of European motorists by TomTom (a popular satnav supplier)
reveals that a quarter of the twenty most congested cities are in the
British Isles - these being London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Belfast and
Dublin.

stopped when the transport authorities turned off the electricity
supply Human error was blamed for this runaway.
Frog march
The main road
through Langadas (near Thessaloniki in Greece) was closed for two
hours when millions of frogs spread across it during a late spring
migration. Three cars had skidded off the road when their drivers
tried to dodge the frogs but none was hurt.
